Free Lecture: CBT and the power of the mind on 27 May Mar 16, 05:01 PM

Despite what you read in the papers and popular magazines, despite what you see on TV and in the movies, living life is not meant to be easy. In order to improve our chances of having good physical health we need to exercise, eat reasonably healthy; in order to keep our own teeth, we need to clean them properly and perhaps abstain from too many sweets; in order to get reasonable results in school most of us need to study hard. Living life is not something like gravity. You can test it out now. Pick up a pen, lift it above the table and let go of it. The pen drops automatically, no one needs to do anything for that, it just happens. Now, you want to drink something. Perhaps a cup of tea or if you are like me a cup of coffee, as strong as you can get it. By sitting where you are, you will not get your drink. YOU have to DO something to get your drink. You either have to get up and make it yourself or ask someone else to make it for you. With happiness and contentment it is something similar. If you want it, you have to work at it and you may need to communicate with others about what you want from life.
Mental Well-Being
Mental well-being is when we are happy and/or content with our life. It also means we are
• Free from intense and enduring negative feelings like anxiety, guilt, anger, depression, shame and embarrassment
• Regularly experiencing moments of positive feelings like happiness, contentment, surprise and relaxation.
• Leading a life we want to lead.
Mental Well-Being is NOT being in a state of blissful happiness 100% of the time. That would be impossible as life has many challenges. To feel very happy when bad things happen would be very unhealthy. Life will contain moments of suffering, sadness, apprehension, irritation, remorse and mild anxiety.
When the proverbial ‘shit’ hits the fan it will stink…..
Mental Well-Being takes effort.
Effort is directed at PLANNING for Well-Being and PLANNING at removing roadblocks to Well-Being.

As usual the lecture starts at 7 pm and we aim to be finished by 8.30 pm. Water and soft-drinks will be served, the lecture will be presented by Henck van Bilsen.
